In 1910, Pierre Lafitte founded the Excelsior newspaper with a staff of photographers in order to cover political, sporting and cultural events in France. It became the first daily newspaper illustrated with photographs, publishing around 30 images a day. Roland Dorgelès and Guillaume Apollinaire published their first texts among these pages. Sold in 1915 to Jean Dupuy, whose family owned « Le Miroir » and « Le Petit Parisien », the daily newspaper printed 100,000 copies. During the 1920s, a Sunday supplement was launched under the name « Excelsior Dimanche illustré ». Albert Londres and Georges Simenon became regular contributors. In 1939, Excelsior printed 132,000 copies a day, with the last issue appearing in June 1940.
