Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Egypt, around the 1900s, the Léon & Lévy studios sent their photographic operators around the world and in particular to the Mediterranean Orient. They travelled with their cumbersome photographic cameras using imposing 16 x 42 cm glass plates. These unusual dimensions allow them to obtain horizontal and vertical panoramic views of exceptional quality. The Léon & Lévy studio was founded in 1864 by Moyse Léon and Isaac, known as Georges Lévy. Between its creation and 1917, the studio sold prints on albumen paper, published single prints, albums of travel photographs and postcards. An ethnographic inventory with a European view of a distant world was thus created for a clientele curious about exotic travels that were difficult to access at the time. In 1970, the Léon and Lévy collection was bought by the Roger-Viollet Agency. Presented at the Roger-Viollet Gallery from October 7, 2021 to January 15, 2022
